Many of us in the Hudson Valley look forward to this time of year as the bounty of fresh produce comes into full swing. Farm stands are overflowing with many wonderful varieties of fruits and vegetables! For anyone who likes to cook and eat (like me) it is one of the blessings about living this part of the country.
What better time to celebrate the best our area has to offer, than with a Meal in the Field, created by Agnes Devereau, one of the Hudson Valley’s best known chefs Better yet, what if the meal happens to be a fund-raiser for a local organization helping those in the community facing food insecurity?
Save the date for September 7th! Meals in the Field will be an opportunity to support a great cause, while enjoying a four-course meal, all sourced with local ingredients, under the stars. The dinner is will be hosted and proceeds will go to the Phillies Bridge Farm Project, a not-for-profit working farm with a mission to educate on and promote sustainable agriculture as well as making sure that everyone has access to nutritious, quality and affordable food.
The Phillies Bridge Farm Project is the oldest non-profit CSA in the Hudson Valley, but its mission is much broader. Food justice and education programs are at the heart of their mission. Their model for growing and distributing food shows us what our food system could look like, by producing healthy food grown using ecologically sound methods.
They offer education programs for adults and children. Their Farm Summer Camp, with an a focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering And Mathematics) learning, offers children of all ages an experience that combines the peaceful and grounding feeling of being on a farm with educational and creative play. You can read more about them in our March 11th article here.
You may know Agnes Devereux as owner/chef of the Village Tea Room Restaurant and Bake Shop in New Paltz, or her most recent catering venture— Agnes Devereux Catering. For the zeal’s in the Field event, she has put together an incredible menu that will be hard to resist (see below)! The menu includes regular, vegetarian and vegan options and except for the bread the meal is gluten-free. Local cider, wine and beer will also be included.
Vegetables will come Phillies Bridge Farm with other ingredients coming from local farms and food producers, many of whom are generously donating their products for the meal. A full list is on the event website.
Seating is limited for this event, so it is suggested that you purchase your tickets before August 25th. But why wait, do it now so you don’t get left out.
